Miracles of Modern Science

Hi. I caught your show in GR at Calvin College. The acoustics were incredible in that concert hall! I wondered, who are your influences? During the Q&A, I thought to myself, "Ah- these are intelligent, witty guys. Talented. Check. Creative. Check. Funny. Check. Interesting? CHECK!" I'm a sci-fi/science/theoretical physics addict so I was digging the convo. I RARELY reply to anything first. Unless something "reaches out" and grabs for me, communication would be at a minimal on my end. However, in this case, I figured I'd be interested in chatting any of you up. I dig your music. Its pretty original. Music is life for me. I was raised in the Pacific Northwest by nudist hippies and we had no TV, only a NICE stereo & every type of musical instrument you could imagine. Sadly I've no idea how i never became a musician myself. Doesn't take away from my discerning taste though & you guys make the Grade for sure! It AMAZES me the music the masses adore. I will GLADLY disagree!

Hi Ari, thank you very much for the kind words! We hope to be back to Calvin soon.

Our influences are hard to pin down -- the five of us all have our individual sources of inspiration, and we're always discovering new ones. But some all-time big ones for me are Charles Mingus, Duke Ellington, Talk Talk, Maurice Duruflé, David Byrne, Aphex Twin, and Queen. Also the films of David Lynch, Terrence Malick, and Robert Bresson, and more recently, writings by Douglas Hofstadter and (getting really nerdy here) Eliezer Yudkowsky, among others. Most of this probably doesn't come through in our music –- it's all blended with my bandmates' own influences and filtered through our instrumentation and certain stylistic constraints. But little bits are floating around in there.

Your background sounds ten times more interesting than any of this, though. Where do we go to ask YOU questions?
